First, make sure to have a good title.
Titles like: "New idea", "My suggestion" won't cut it!
Second, make sure to create a poll that reflects all points of view!
A poll where all votes point at agreeing with your idea is not a good poll!
Thirdly, make sure that the poll will close automatically up to 2 weeks after its creation (exceptions may apply, contact staff if needed).
Forthly, make sure that the poll votes are not visible to anyone until the poll has been locked or expired (this is a suggestion to prevent "going with the flow").
